GOD'S APPEARANCE ON KSAN
by Norman Davis
One of the first cats I met when I arrived at KSAN in 1972 was a hairy, greasy guy from New York who was known as "Teddybear." Teddybear made his living selling psychoactive produce and, as it was quite in vogue in San Francisco then, he was fairly popular at the station.
The first night I was there, Teddybear showed up with a huge bag of the white stuff in a quart-size baggie. This was passed around the Lizard Lounge for some time amongst 15 or 20 Jivers, friends and followers.
One night, some months later, Teddybear was hanging out as usual in the Lizard Lounge while I did my show. Around 4 a.m., he came striding into the studio with an urgent look on his face. He told me that God was speaking to him and that he had to share the message with the audience. (Only God knows what he was on that night.)
Not one to dismiss lightly a connection to the Almighty, I told him to sit down and quickly threw a tape on the recorder. When the Van Morrison song I was playing ended, I opened up the guest microphone and gave him a hand signal to proceed. Teddybear took the opportunity and for two or three minutes, emoted on the message God was sending him. Then, as he started to fade to black, I segued into more music.
It was another inspirational moment at a station that experienced thousands.
